Terrence Lewis

Translator and Software Developer
After a period as a member of a religious order in South Africa and a theology student in Brazil, Terence has spent his entire working life in the language industry. He worked as an external translator for Unesco and lexicographer for Harrap, and then ran a translation business for some 12 years. His passion for machine translation grew out of the recognition of his industrial customers' need to handle major documentation projects swiftly, securely and consistently. He taught himself Java and wrote a Dutch-English rule based machine translation program which was used for over a decade by Siemens Nederland to translate technical documentation. Switching from Java to Python, he went on to build Neural Machine Translation models for industrial and business clients. Having developed ChatGPT Translator Plus as a gateway to OpenAI's models, Terence's current focus is on the development of secure AI-based translation applications which run locally. His latest product, the Local AI Translator, handles the same range of languages as ChatGPT without being connected to the Internet. When not seated at his desk, Terence is an adventurous cook!
